Botanical Name: Alocasia

Common Name: Elephant Ear

Alocasia are from the Araceae family, typically found in subtropical Asia and Eastern Asia. They are a flowering plant but they are known for their unique foliage. The common name Elephant Ears was given because of the shape of the plant's leaves. Alocasia has about 97 native species and many more hybrids are being cultivated.

Alocasia are grown from bulbs and these bulbs assist the plant to store water and nutrients they need to produce new growth. These bulbs are quite important for Alocasia to reproduce. Leaf propagations will not work in this situation. The bulb will produce an offshoot and once this shoot matures you can split it off from the main bulb. Similar to Tulips (also grown from bulbs), They'll go dormant when the temperature starts to drop! Depending on where you live, if you want to prevent dormancy then you have to keep your Alocasia somewhere warmer.

Alocasia at a Glance:

  • Sensitive to drafts and should avoid placement near windows, vents, and doors
