Philodendron 'Hope' Floor Plant
Botanical Name: Philodendron
In Greek, the translation for "Philo" is love and "Dendron" is tree. Together meaning "Tree-Lover" or "Tree-Hugger", which makes sense from its growth habit of clinging to trees! Philodendron are part of the Araceae family and native to the Caribbean, Venezuela, and Colombia.
New leaves on a philodendron are wrapped in a thin, opaque sheath called a cataphyll. Sometimes a growing leaf will get stuck in the cataphyll, causing the "Cinderella Shoe" effect where the leaf looks like the famous foot-squeezing-into-the-glass-slipper. This can happen when there's a drop in humidity or light. You can help your philodendron out of its glass slipper by carefully adding moisture to the "Cinderella Shoe" area and using a wet Q-Tip to loosen it. You can also make a small incision in the cataphyll to set it free!
