The Oxalis triangularis, commonly called false shamrock or butterfly plant, is a colorful and edible member of the Oxalidaceae (wood sorrel) family. The name is derived from the Greek word oxalis (which means acid) because the plants in this group have an acidic taste.

Due to it's photonastic response, which is it's reaction of opening up its leaves during the day and closing at night, Oxalis triangularis are said to have a fleeting resemblance to fluttering butterfly wings.
