Botanical Name: Tracheophyta

Common Name: Fern

Ferns go way back! So far that 360 million year old fossils have been found of them! These prehistoric plants are quite different because they are "vascular plants", meaning they don't flower or produce seeds. Instead they use spores to reproduce. Ferns are found on almost every single continent, except Antarctica! There is no shortage of fern species either (there are approximately 10,000 out there!) with New Zealand winning the title of having the most variety, at about 230! That's a lot of ferns!

Heard of Kokedama?

Kokedama are Japanese moss planters. The word "koke" means moss and "dama" means ball. These are wonderful for many plants, especially ferns, and create an interesting conversation piece in your home! You can make a Kokedama of your own with some sphagnum moss, a fern of your choice, and some twine/fishing line!

If you want a step-by-step tutorial, we're offering an in-person class! Check out the next class here!
