What is a houseplant clinician?

A houseplant clinician is like a doctor for houseplants!

Prior to becoming a houseplant clinician our team members are thoroughly trained in-house for at least 6 months in plant and pest identification, diagnostics and treatment  of pest/fungal and bacterial infections, root and moisture distress, soil ecology, planter selection, plant species care needs / sensitivities and more!

Needless to say we take our plant knowledge seriously so we can offer you care that is backed by science, practice and compassion at the core of everything we do.

How many plants can I bring?
You're welcome to bring any and all plants in your collection you'd like us to look at!

We recommend booking a 30 minute appointment for 5 plants or less (small to medium sized), or a 60 minute slot if you have more than 5 or your plant(s) are quite large.

Can I bring my own pots?

If you have planters you'd like us to use during your appointment feel free to bring them along. Once your plant(s) have been assessed we will do our best to use the materials you've brought to meet the needs of your plants. If your plant will fare better in a planter of a different size or material than the planters you've provided we will discuss other options with you during your appointment.

We also offer a pot drilling service if you have vessels you'd like to use that don't have drainage holes.

Can I bring plants in that weren't purchased at Urban Sprouts?

A resounding yes! While we always appreciate when you purchase plants from us, we're here to help you with every single one of your houseplants! Even if they've been purchased elsewhere, inherited, picked up off the side of the road, or rescued from a big box store we want to help you with their care and long term health goals!

How much is it going to cost?

Our goal is to offer product and service solutions that meet at the intersection of your plant's health/maintenance needs and your ideal care, environment, and aesthetic desires.

We're happy to take a look at how your plant is responding to their treatment and make sure their symptoms are in the normal range post visit. We recommend scheduling a digital appointment (conducted over video chat) 2-4 weeks after your in person visit if your plants are showing any signs of distress.

Our Service Guarantee:
We know that your plants aren't JUST plants. They are memories, inheritances, stories and sometimes even a representation of the person you are aspiring to be. That's why your success as a plant caretaker is at the heart of what we do. We will only provide services and treatments that in our professional opinions are at the best interest of the long term health of your plants.

Recovery:
With plants, just like in human or animal medical treatments, there are situations where the road to recovery can take some time, or things may get  a little worse before they get better. There is even a small chance that your plant may not fully recover from treatment. We always do our best to limit stress and to circumvent long term problems by addressing issues as soon as we can. Repotting, treating root damage, temperature or sun damage, root trimming, and undergoing treatments for severe pest issues are a lot like a human or animal patient going in for surgery. It is our ultimate goal is to provide services that are going to be best for the long term health goals you have for your plant. In some cases we may catch root damage or other long term issues in the clinic before physical or visible symptoms set in and treating for those problems could cause discoloration/stress/or shedding but addressing a problem sooner will always be a better result than never addressing it all.

Repotting

What grows above the soil is only half of the story when it comes to the health of your plant. Repotting allows us to take a look under the hood and examine the roots and soil that nourish and drive the growth and vitality of your plant.

What happens during a repot service?

During your repotting service one of our houseplant clinicians will carefully remove your plant from it's pot using techniques aimed to limit the amount of stress your plant experiences during the service.

Unpotting techniques used will vary based on any sensitivities of your plant, species, condition, pot and planting environment. Once out of it's planter your clinician will examine the roots and make recommendations about soil, containers, and any trimming based on the condition of the roots and soil.

A healthy year of growth will usually result in your plant moving into a container 1-2" larger than its current pot. If damage is found in the roots we may recommend your plant move into a smaller pot and or change the soil type to better suit the health of the root ball.

How do I know my plant needs repotting?

We recommend plants in pots 12" or smaller be repotted annually.
Plants in 12" planters and larger should be repotted every 1-3 years.
Plants potted directly into containers of any size without drainage holes should be examined about every 6 months.

Please note* If signs of stress appear the roots should be examined regardless of how long its been since its last repot so we can address any issues before they become too severe to treat.

Common signs your plant may be due for a repot

  • Your plant lives in the original nursery pot purchased in
  • It has been over a year since it was last repotted
  • Your plant was repotted more than 3-4 weeks ago and is still showing new symptoms of stress such as discoloration or leaf shedding
  • Stunted or mis-shaped growth
  • Sudden yellowing and or drooping of bottom leaves
  • Roots exposed above the soil or out of the bottom of the pot
  • Water running out of the bottom of your pot faster than usual while watering
  • Soil staying wet longer than usual
  • Soil drying out much faster than usual / needing to water much more frequently
  • Browning that is medium to dark in color and soft, bruise-like in texture
  • Flowering plants produce fewer or no blooms at the usual time
  • Leaves suddenly start shedding off on their own or with unusually light pressure (discolored or healthy appearing leaves)
  • Appearance of soil based insects such as soil centipedes, root weevils, or soil/fungus gnats

If your plant is showing any of the above symptoms or you have questions about the condition of your plant schedule an appointment and we can help you assess if your plant needs repotting or any other services.

Take a look at some of our work!

Ficus: Severe stem & root decay

A smashing success story!
This Ginseng Ficus (two species grafted together to achieve showy thick roots and a bushy top) was brought to our clinic in response to a concern over a  large squishy spot on the main stem along with some discolored leaves.

Upon inspection the plant had suffered severe root and stem rot. The integrity of the main stem still remained intact so the decaying tissue in the stem and roots was carefully removed with sterilized instruments.
(Yep, like surgery)

The first photo shows the plant after the decayed tissue was removed and the remaining root ball was potted into a pot the proper size for the remaining roots using soil blended with the recovery of the root system and microbial support for the open wound on the stem in mind.

Picture two,  a few months later the opening in the stem has fully calloused over and the plant was brought in for a check in and some routine pruning to maintain its bonsai-like growth habit.

*Untreated decay and pruning results not shown in photos

Did you know?

Decay in plant stems and roots spreads. At the first sign, have the tissue physically removed

Like a pirate on the open seas the medical technology for stopping infections from spreading in your plant is limited to surgery or removal of the affected tissue. Luckily your plants won't need to make use of a peg leg or hook hand, but the sooner the infection is stopped the less damage it will do.

Mushy roots or stems?

Bring it to the clinic for treatment! Our experience and practice in sanitation and stress management for your plant drastically increases the chance your plant will thrive after surgery!

Pothos: Totem mounting & repot

This glorious Pothos 'Green Queen' (Epipremnum aureum 'Green Queen') is a repeat visitor to the clinic! We had the pleasure several years ago of helping save this plant from some severe root decay. Now, a little over 2 years later it has grown at least 10 feet and is being repotted into a larger vessel and mounted on a climbing totem!

Did you know?

Most trailing plants are species that would grow up the sides of trees in their native habitats

Give your climbing plants an apparatus that most closely replicates their favorite kind of tree and they become easier to care for, grow faster, and often keeps the root ball (and therefor the pot) smaller!

Plant getting a little too long?

Bring it to the clinic and we can explore the best mounting options for your plant and aesthetic values!

Aloe: Split, repot & stabilize

This Medicinal Aloe plant (Aloe vera) had dozens of pups (baby aloe plants) and was in a lightweight  plastic pot that was much too small. The limited space was causing deformed/stunted growth and was at a high risk of falling.

The aloe pups were separated from the mother plant and repotted into their own pots so they would have the proper space and nutrients to grow.

Mama was moved into a larger ceramic pot that was a proper size and weight for the root and foliage mass. We used a specialty soil blend which focused on root strengthening and proper drainage.  We also provided temporary stabilization structures for the plant while it was transported home and acclimates to the new pot.

Did you know?

Your plant making lots of babies could be a sign they're stressed or their pot is too small!

Plants that produce offspring by pupping (such as Aloe vera and spider plants) are more likely to do so if they are experiencing root decay or root binding.

In some species reproductive biological mechanisms trigger if they sense they are running out of resources and will then focus on trying to reproduce rather than grow their pups might end up in a space where there are more resources available.

Pot getting little crowded?

Bring it to the clinic and we can give the mother and pups the space and resources to grow and thrive!

Only the best for you!

WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING

Urban Sprouts is now the only shop I go to for all my plants and supplies. I started collecting plants about a year ago and Jen and her team have become my go-to gurus for all things plant! They help me locate all the plants I want for my collection, help me with all my questions. The shop is absolutely stunning! It is full of beautiful gifts, ceramics, as well as high quality and diverse plants. I can’t recommend this place enough - knowledgeable, approachable, and all-around good people.

Katey C.

I feel welcome and well taken care of every time I go into Urban Sprouts. Jen and the team are so knowledgeable. I love that not only can I get beautiful plants to decorate with, but care instructions and an endless amount of support once I get home. They are the best!

Sara B.

I have been to other plants stores in the past, but have never found myself returning to them over and over as I do with Urban Sprouts. The shop has the most unique and varied collection of all things from plants, crystals, pots, and much more... It has the best service possible for your plant babies. Whatever one could possibly need help with in caring for one's plants, Urban Sprouts is always readily available to help! Thank you!
